Who are the Gurkhas

Gurkhas are noble and respected Nepalese soldiers who are specially selected to serve in a unit of the British Army. They are known for being as brave in combat as they are good-natured in their everyday life. Each Gurkha carries two khukuri knives, one for every-day use and one for ceremonial purposes. Their famous war cry, “Ayo Gorkhali” translates as “The Gurkhas are here”. Their motto, 'Kaphar hunnu bhanda marnu ramro' means, 'It is better to die than to live like a coward’.

For the first time ever, the Gurkhas are welcoming civilians into their world for our unique weekend adventures.

Join the Snowland team along with Gurkhas and ex-Gurkhas' as they take you through an exclusive weekend of fun physical activities, team challenges, culture and talks in an outdoor environment located in the heart of the Cotswolds.

You will be introduced to elements of the rigorous selection process for the Brigade of Gurkhas, culminating in the infamous Doko Challenge - a team race carrying a traditional Nepalese Doko basket.

The Gurkhas will teach you the art of using the Gurkha’s sacred Kukri knife, both a formidable weapon and a useful tool used by the hill tribes in Nepal. (Don’t worry, you’ll be safe with our wooden training Kukris!)

"We spent the weekend living the fascinating life of a Gurkha".

Find out what it's like to be a Gurkha on deployment, with the opportunity to sleep outdoors in a military bivvy bag and basha, learn how to light a fire, cook your military ration pack of food, and tuck into a special Nepalese dinner.

You'll also get to hear what life is like as a Gurkha soldier, learn about their history serving with the British military, be inspired by the Gurkha mindset and resilience (it rubs off!), and enjoy a film screening and drinks around the campfire.

The Gurkha Getaway includes a weekend of activities, camping pitch, shower facilities, food for all meals, military ration pack, soft drinks, tea & coffee, Nepalese beer, film screening, cultural talks, and hire of a military bivvy bag, and a special free gift!  And proceeds support Himalayan children.

An energising, inspiring weekend with a difference that will revive you in the great outdoors and offer an unforgettable experience.

Come and join us on the world’s first ever Gurkha activity weekend!  We limit numbers on this extraordinary experience so book your place asap!

Proceeds from the Gurkha Getaway support the work of Snowland Journeys, enabling young people in Nepal to maintain contact with their families alongside their education, and developing livelihoods in Himalayan communities.

So not only do you get to enjoy an extraordinary experience, you will be helping Nepalese children at the same time. Adventure meets social value!
